Was mid-to-late 90s NHL hockey really that boring?

There were a lot of interesting stories, dynamic players, etc. I was too young to really remember much, so I'm wondering if maybe the so-called "dead puck era" is a little overstated. I mean, don't real hockey fans find all hockey interesting?
