How to stop property tax forclosure?

I recently became aware that my wife owes property taxes for the previous three years. 2008 - 2010 in Jackson Co., MO. We have been married 6 months. Instead of allowing us to pay 2008. The county os petitioning for the whole amount. $6k. We recieved a certified letter in the mail yesterday. Stating the intent to forclose It says they will publish the intent in a local paper on june 22. and we have a right to file an answer by Aug. 22 but gives no final date that we have to pay. She inherited this property upon her mothers death. Both her, and her mothers name is on the deed. " Martha & Nanett" I don't have a clue if this ever went to probate or not. I could probably seel whtever we have to try and satisfy this debt. or try to get a personal loan. I hate to loose this property as it is paid in full and owned free and clear. she grew up in this house. What would be our legal recourse as she does not work due to physical problems and has not disability. What would be our options?
